More than 260,000 American women served in the U.S. military in Vietnam, all of them volunteers. Of the 10,000 who served in the combat zone, most were Army nurses, the “angels of the battlefield”.
Army nurse Gayle Schaefer served as combat field hospital in Vietnam, treating troops to get them back in the field, or, for those too seriously injured, to the next stage in their medical care.
The Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument stands as a permanent honor to all Texans who served in the Vietnam War – and as a permanent memorial to the 3,417 Texans who never came home. This memorial is made through The 3417 Project, which individually honors each Texan who died in the Vietnam War.
